Description
Herodotus is called “the Father of history”, for his attempt to understand the causes of the Persian War of the 5th century BC, and he conducted a genuine, objective, and thorough investigation of them, right down to the known boundaries of the world. Though in his works, myth and reality intertwined, he still can be considered as the first historian.
From the Trojan War to the Battle of Platte, from Marathon to Thermal pass, from the legendary Princess IO to Europe with Xerxes and Leonidas as Kings, Herodotus marveled at the diversity of customs in the ancient world. He details the lives of the Persians, Greeks or Egyptians, and question the existence of man-eating Cyclops, giant ants, feather-covered nations, eagles, and humans at the feet of goats. He explores all the known world, from as far away as Ethiopia to the mysterious Denmark.
“I, Herodotus of Halicanas, present the results of my investigations here, so that the memory of what they have achieved may not be blotted out by the time, so that their great achievements may not be forgotten. In particular, I shall explain the cause of the war between the Greeks and the barbarians.” Herodotus (480-425 BC)
The book is full of violent scenes that reflect the customs of what Herodotus calls distant times, is instructive and enlightening for learned readers, and shocking for children under 10.
