Feature

★Published in Italian and English.
★The book is the exhibition catalog of the Lorenzo Library in Florence. All the exhibits come from the very rich collections of the library. Through these rich and interesting art exhibitions, antique maps and drawings that are usually only accessible to professional scholars can be seen with the public.

Description

The volume accompanying the exhibition presents for the first time the color images of all 82 Castello's cards so called because, from the end of the eighteenth century until the arrival in 1921 at the Laurentian Library, they had decorated the rooms of Castello, near Florence.
On the occasion of the grand tour (1667-1669) that had taken him to various countries of Europe, the young Grand Duke Cosimo III had bought, during his first trip to the Netherlands, sixty-five handwritten geographical maps and city views, and in the second and more long, arrived in Lisbon, copies of marine maps.
The collection of Dutch, Portuguese and Spanish colonial maps and views, allows us to witness the emergence of the global world of the mid-seventeenth century, the circulation of men and knowledge.
The catalog accurately describes and analyzes each map, provides information on the places depicted and on the content of the captions which, if present, describe them in a timely manner. The essays delve into its history, from the moment of purchase by the Grand Duke to the arrival in the Laurentian.
