Feature

★This is a poetic and deeply meaningful story about the marvelous relationship between a lonely grandmother and her grandson, unfolding thoughts and questions about the world, the infinity and eternity of the universe, and the fragility of human life! It embodies the warmth between grandparents and grandchildren, and also conveys the importance of companionship in soothing a lonely mind. The poetic words and excellent illustrations elevate the story to the question of everyone facing the universe and time, understanding the past, comprehending the present, and bettering our lives for the future, like a philosophical work of deep meaning, which can be interpreted from multiple perspectives for multidimensional perceptions and rewards!

Description

It was the first time I came back to grandma’s. I was happy to see her again. We ate pancakes and drank apple juice. Calypso, her cat, purred next to me but I found it sad, and also my grand-mother, of course. She told me she felt better but she was still a bit down in the dumps.
2. No TV told Grandma, it’s out of order; I don’t miss it a lot.
I asked what we could do then, playing tablet for example or doing a game of cards.
- No we won’t, tonight, we’re going outside.
- To the cinema?
- Better than that.
And she opened her home’s door.
3. The moon was looking at us, teasing us in the very dark night. We could hear the crockets singing, the still hot air of a beautiful end summer evening surrounded us like in a shawl.
Some frogs were croaking in the distance.
Grandma took me by the hand. We slowly went down the path leading to the sea until the cliff edge. Calypso was aloof following us, smelling the perfume of the wild plants, watching out, innocently, for the shrews and bunnies running in the land.
Tonight, we are looking at the stars, told Grandma.
The soft breeze full of kelp’s fragrances (it’s a kind of seaweeds) was caressing us. The quiet ocean reflected the light of thousands, millions of stars.
I asked:
- Is it far the stars?
- Yes it is, very far.
- Further than dad and mum’s?
- Much further!
I guessed so. We laughed.
A gull was turning around us silently.
- And the bird, can it go in the stars? I asked.
- Perhaps, if it takes its time, a lot of time. It will greet the moon, then the cosmonauts, will pass by Mars, warm up near to the sun. It will fly, fly always higher, always further, weave in and out of the planets and asteroids. And then after, it will get out from our galaxy.
I asked where the bird would go after our galaxy.
- It will go on crossing other galaxies.
- Many?
- More than many, thousands, millions, billions of stars families. The gull will quietly continue its journey. For him, the moon and the sun will have disappeared since a long time. And Mercury, Jupiter, the Milky Way, Aldébaran…but the gull is not in a hurry, it will go until the world’s end.
I thought to myself that the gull might be tired by this long trip.
- No it will not, it will let it carried by the stellar currents to fly to the edge of the universe.
- And then? When it will be at the edge of the universe, what will the gull become?
- It will go on.
A cloud that had just hidden the moon split; a ray of light started next to us where a speck of dust was vibrating.
Grandma hugged me:
- Look at this speck of dust, it is tiny, nonetheless; it also contains the whole universe, its present, its past, its future.
10. - What about if we cut it half?
- We will have two specks of dust.
- And we cut it again?
- Well we will have 4 and 8 and 16 and 32…etc. You know how to count. Each time, we will have some specks of dust that will be each of us some universes…
- It will never stop?
- Maybe one day…once the count is over…
